A Beitbridge man has been fined US$5,000 for smuggling large quantities of meat products into Zimbabwe.
Aison Muzanenhamo (28) was intercepted at a police roadblock along the Mvuma–Gweru Road on April 27 while driving a Nissan UD truck carrying undeclared goods.
According to Zimbabwe Republic Police Midlands provincial spokesperson Emmanuel Mahoko, authorities discovered 3,226kg of polony, 4,840kg of chicken meat and 1,614kg of Russian sausages concealed in the vehicle.
Officials from the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and health inspectors were called to verify the cargo, after which Muzanenhamo was issued with a US$5,000 fine. The truck was impounded and is being held at ZIMRA offices in Gweru pending payment.
Police have since warned the public against engaging in smuggling, saying enforcement operations will be intensified to curb illegal activities, prevent revenue losses and safeguard public health.
