TelOne FC have parted ways with head coach Herbert Maruwa following a poor start to the season that has left the Gweru-based side deep in relegation trouble.
Maruwa departs with the "Wifi Boys" sitting 16th on the log standings, having managed just three points from nine matches. The struggling run included a string of disappointing home results, culminating in a 1-0 defeat to Herentals FC — their fifth loss at home.
Club president Oscah Nduwure confirmed the development, indicating that the decision followed internal discussions with the coach.
"He still has a running contract with the club, which was due for renewal subject to performance-related appraisals, but we had a meeting with him and agreed not to renew the contract when it expires next month," Nduwure said.
Assistant coach Charles Mutero has been appointed to take charge of the team on an interim basis while the club begins its search for a permanent replacement.
Nduwure revealed that the recruitment process will adopt a modern, data-driven approach.
"In the meantime, Charles Mutero will be in charge of the team as we look for a replacement. We are taking our time because we want a coach who can navigate the terrain we are in, so we will be going scientific, using AI tools to fill in the vacant post," he said.
Several high-profile local coaches have already been linked with the vacancy, including Luke Masomere and Wilson Mtekede, who are reportedly among the frontrunners.
Other candidates believed to have expressed interest include Mkhuphali Masuku, Rodwell Dhlakama, Saul Chaminuka, Paul Chimalizeni and Mark Mathe.
Reports indicate that around 15 coaches have applied for the position as TelOne seek to arrest their slide and avoid relegation in what is shaping up to be a turbulent phase of the season.
