A kombi crew and their passengers bravely teamed up to subdue an armed robbery suspect who had attacked a teenage girl in Mutare.
The incident occurred on the night of May 2, 2026, as the 16-year-old was walking home from a church service at the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) in Chikanga.
According to Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, the suspect, 19-year-old Saymore Chikaya, allegedly emerged from a bushy area armed with an iron axe and a catapult before confronting the teenager along a footpath near a bridge.
"The accused raised his iron axe, threatened to strike the complainant if she made any noise and ordered her to surrender her valuables," said Chinyoka.
The suspect reportedly grabbed the victim's Samsung A31 cellphone, triggering a struggle between the two.
As the scuffle unfolded, a passing commuter omnibus — a Toyota Hiace — driven by Silas Mutseneki approached the scene. Sensing danger, the driver stopped the vehicle, prompting the conductor, Kudakwashe Bindi, and passengers to rush to assist.
Together, they managed to overpower the suspect and recover the stolen cellphone, as well as the weapons used in the нападение.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to police and is now facing charges of attempted robbery.
Police have commended the quick-thinking kombi crew and passengers for their bravery, which helped prevent further harm to the teenager.
