Zimbabwe's domestic football scene has received a dramatic boost after businessman Wicknell Chivayo dangled a massive incentive ahead of the Harare Derby, offering Dynamos FC a brand-new luxury bus if they defeat arch-rivals CAPS United this Sunday.
The high-stakes pledge, made during an interview with Capitalk FM, has injected fresh excitement into one of the country's biggest football fixtures, set for Rufaro Stadium.
Responding to a fan's appeal, Chivayo issued a straightforward challenge: beat CAPS United and earn a new team coach. With the vehicle expected to cost over US$200,000, it represents the largest single-match incentive in Dynamos' 63-year history.
The offer marks a significant moment for the Glamour Boys, who have long endured criticism from rivals over their ageing team transport, often mockingly referred to as a "chicken bus." Meanwhile, better-funded clubs have upgraded to modern, state-of-the-art coaches.
Chivayo has recently emerged as a key benefactor in local football. He previously purchased a luxury bus for Division Two side Avelion FC, owned by his brother, and earlier this year donated a high-end 75-seater coach to Highlanders FC, complete with premium amenities such as Wi-Fi, reclining seats and onboard entertainment.
While the spotlight has largely focused on Dynamos, CAPS United president Farai Jere has opted to keep his team grounded, dismissing the hype as a distraction.
Instead, Jere has moved to motivate his squad internally, promising to more than double their standard US$500 winning bonuses if they secure victory.
"This is one of our biggest games on the PSL calendar," Jere said. "CAPS United and Dynamos is a colossal fixture."
The derby comes at a time when both teams are in strong form. CAPS United currently lead the league standings with 22 points, while Dynamos sit fifth with 17 points after 10 matches.
Jere acknowledged the significance of the encounter, noting that a Dynamos win would narrow the gap to just two points, while a CAPS United victory would extend their lead at the top.
He also highlighted Dynamos' formidable home record, having gone 10 months unbeaten at Rufaro Stadium.
"Dynamos are a big club and need to be respected," he said. "We are approaching this game in that spirit."
With pride, points and now a luxury bus on the line, Sunday's Harare Derby is shaping up to be one of the most compelling clashes in recent memory.
