A 39‑year‑old Nyanga man has been convicted of malicious damage to property after destroying crops belonging to another villager during a land dispute.

Luckson Benedict, also known as Luckson Mahato, was found guilty by the Rusape Magistrates' Court over an incident that occurred on 18 April 2026 at Village 17, Fox Rock in Nyanga.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the dispute arose over a piece of land that the complainant, Mugayi Anesu, had been cultivating with permission. Benedict confronted Anesu, challenged his right to farm the land and refused to accept that the complainant had lawful authority.

The court heard that Benedict unlawfully entered the field and deliberately destroyed crops ready for harvest, including ripe maize, potato plants and various vegetables. The damage was valued at US$440.

The court found that Benedict acted intentionally and without legal justification. The magistrate stressed that land disputes do not justify unlawful conduct or self‑help remedies.

Benedict was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition he pays US$440 restitution, and an additional five months, suspended on condition he completes 140 hours of community service at Majejo Primary School.

The ruling reinforces the courts' stance against individuals taking the law into their own hands, particularly in land‑related disputes, which remain common in rural communities.
