A section of Chinhoyi came to a standstill on Wednesday morning after murder suspect Nyasha Mutodi (36) was escorted by police to Pick n Pay Supermarket along Magamba Way for indications linked to a fatal stabbing case.
Mutodi is accused of stabbing his colleague, Tinotenda Nyamukute (38), following a dispute over a US$9 debt during a money-changing transaction. The incident, which occurred on May 1 at around 2:30pm, is reported to have escalated after Nyamukute allegedly denied owing Mutodi the money.
According to police allegations, Mutodi then produced a kitchen knife from his pocket and stabbed Nyamukute once on the right side of the stomach, just below the ribs. The victim collapsed at the scene, while the suspect attempted to flee but was later apprehended by members of the public and handed over to Zimbabwe Republic Police at Chinhoyi Central Police Station.
Nyamukute was first taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital before being transferred to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in Harare, where he later died from his injuries.
On Wednesday, police brought Mutodi back to the crime scene for indications, a procedure that drew large crowds after news of the exercise spread quickly across the town. Magamba Way was temporarily cordoned off, with police barricading the area and diverting traffic as onlookers gathered on both sides of the road.
The accused was transported to the nearby TM Pick n Pay Supermarket, where the original confrontation is believed to have taken place. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, witnesses said Mutodi appeared calm and even exchanged light moments with police officers during the process.
"We are here to see what kind of a person could pull out a knife to stab someone over US$9. It is so painful and we want justice to be served," said one onlooker.
Mutodi has since appeared before a Chinhoyi Magistrate for initial remand and is due back in court on May 19 as investigations continue.
