Netflix has made a major expansion move into the South African entertainment market with the adaptation of Zimbabwean-born, Johannesburg-based author Sue Nyathi's debut novel The Polygamist into a 22-episode "supernovela".
The series, which is set to premiere globally on June 12, 2026, marks Netflix's first locally produced supernovela in South Africa and signals a growing investment in African storytelling for international audiences.
The production follows Jonasi Gomora, played by Sdumo Mtshali, a powerful self-made CEO whose carefully constructed empire and glamorous personal life begin to unravel under the weight of his decisions.
At the heart of the story are four women whose lives become deeply entangled with Jonasi, exposing themes of ambition, pride, loyalty, and deception. His first wife anchors the emotional centre of the family, while subsequent relationships trigger escalating tension and confrontation among the women.
The series explores the cost of love and what producers describe as the "quiet violence of patriarchy", evolving the narrative beyond domestic drama into a broader commentary on power, control, and survival within modern relationships.
In a notable creative shift from the original Zimbabwe-set novel, Jonasi's character has been reimagined as a contemporary South African corporate CEO, replacing the book's banking magnate background to better reflect the current corporate landscape.
The ensemble cast includes Gugu Gumede alongside Kwanele Mthethwa and S'thandiwe Kgoroge, among others.
The series is produced by Stained Glass Productions, with direction led by Akin Omotoso, Rolie Nikiwe, and Nthabi Tau.
Industry observers say the project reflects Netflix's strategy of elevating African literary works into high-budget serialized drama aimed at global audiences, while also expanding the reach of African-authored stories on international platforms.
