Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday officially commissioned the refurbished Adlam House and Nurses Home at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, saying government's hospital modernisation programme will be extended to all districts nationwide.

The refurbishment forms part of the Presidential Hospital Renovation Programme, which was launched following a surprise inspection by Mnangagwa at major referral hospitals last year, during which he found sections of the facilities in a dilapidated state.

The project at Parirenyatwa was undertaken under the programme by Prevail Group, a company linked to presidential investment adviser Paul Tungwarara, although the contract value was not disclosed.

In his address, Mnangagwa said similar rehabilitation works were already underway at Mpilo Central Hospital and Sally Mugabe Central Hospital as part of efforts to upgrade public health infrastructure.

"The Presidential Hospital Renovation Programme is ongoing nationwide and will reach every hospital across all districts in the country," he said.

He also highlighted progress at the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital, saying improvements were aimed at ensuring women receive dignified and safe maternal healthcare services.

"The women of our great country, no matter where they live, deserve dignity, safety and comfort as they access quality health services," Mnangagwa said.

The President said government remained committed to improving working conditions for health workers, describing doctors, nurses and other professionals as central to the functioning of the health system.

"No health system can function without skilled, disciplined and committed professionals," he said.

Mnangagwa also called for greater collaboration between government, the private sector, development partners and the Zimbabwean diaspora to support health sector modernisation.

The commissioning comes amid recent industrial action by nurses and other health workers demanding better salaries, improved working conditions and consistent availability of medicines and equipment in public hospitals.

Analysts say Zimbabwe's public health system continues to face major challenges, including ageing infrastructure, staff shortages, low morale and sustained migration of skilled personnel.
