A Masvingo accounts clerk has been convicted after allegedly using company funds for Aviator betting and later filing a false robbery report to cover up the offence.

Blessed Chamisa of Rujeko B, Masvingo, appeared before Magistrate Nyirenda facing charges of theft and making a false report to the police.

The court heard that Chamisa was employed by Old Mutual Digital Services Private Limited, operating as O'Mari, as an accounts clerk at the Exormart Garage booth in Masvingo.

Prosecutor Romeo Zibani told the court that on May 12, 2026, Chamisa received US$2 000 from the company, which was added to an existing balance of US$500, bringing the total float under his control to US$2 500 for cash-in and cash-out transactions.

On May 13, Chamisa allegedly reported to Zimbabwe Republic Police at Rujeko that he had been kidnapped and robbed of US$2 900 while travelling to the O'Mari Masvingo branch.

He claimed he had boarded a Honda Fit carrying four occupants who later abducted him and dumped him at Ngundu Business Centre after stealing the money.

However, police investigations reportedly established that the robbery claim was false.

The court heard that between February and May this year, Chamisa had allegedly been diverting company funds for Aviator betting at Mwos Betting House in Masvingo.

Chamisa pleaded guilty to the charges and was represented by lawyer Omen Mafa.

Magistrate Nyirenda sentenced him to six months imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition that he restitutes the complainant US$2 500.
