Former Cabinet minister Walter Mzembi, who recently spent over 10 months in pretrial detention before being acquitted, on Monday visited political activist Madzibaba VeShanduko, who has remained in remand prison since October last year.

Madzibaba VeShanduko, born Godfrey Karembera, was arrested on allegations linked to distributing flyers, with police initially claiming he had evaded arrest. He has remained in custody pending trial since 20 October.

Mzembi and Karembera reportedly spent time together during their respective periods in remand custody, a connection the former minister reflected on during his visit.

"Return(ed) to Harare Remand on Africa Day! Godfrey Karembera aka Madzibaba VeShanduko is one of my sons that I spent time counseling (kunyaradzana) inside," Mzembi said.

"Today I met him together with my butler team who supported my stay. We prayed, laughed and reminisced."

Mzembi said the visit was also an opportunity to reflect on their shared experiences during detention, while expressing solidarity with the activist.

Karembera rose to prominence during the height of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), where he became widely recognisable for his distinctive yellow attire associated with the party's supporters.

His continued remand has drawn attention from journalists and commentators, including Hopewell Chin'ono and Blessed Mhlanga, who have previously raised concerns about his prolonged detention on international platforms.

Mzembi, who was facing multiple charges relating to alleged misconduct during his tenure in government, was acquitted earlier this month after spending more than 10 months in custody.
