FIFTY-ONE learners from Barham Green Primary School in Bulawayo and a female passerby were injured on Friday afternoon after a swarm of bees attacked pupils on the school premises.
The incident, which caused panic among learners and staff, resulted in 52 people being rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for medical treatment.
It is understood that some learners accidentally disturbed a beehive within the school grounds, triggering the aggressive attack.
Witnesses said scenes of chaos unfolded as pupils ran in different directions seeking safety while teachers and school staff attempted to shield them from the swarm.
Bulawayo Chief Fire Officer Mr Mhlangano Moyo confirmed the incident and said emergency services responded swiftly to assist the victims and contain the situation.
"We had a swarm of bees that was so violent. Fifty-one school children were seriously stung together with a female adult passerby who was also seriously injured. The Brigade used fire hose reels to subdue the bees while four ambulances were mobilised to convey the injured to UBH hospital," said Mr Moyo.
The Bulawayo Fire Brigade attended the scene and managed to control the swarm using fire hose reels, allowing emergency personnel to safely evacuate the injured.
Four ambulances were dispatched to transport the affected learners and the passerby to hospital for treatment.
The attack temporarily disrupted learning activities at the school as emergency services worked to secure the area and ensure the safety of learners and staff.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the condition of those injured, but all affected individuals received medical attention at United Bulawayo Hospitals.
The incident has raised concerns about the presence of beehives in and around school premises, with calls for regular inspections to identify and safely remove potential hazards before they pose a threat to learners and members of the public.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are expected to continue, while school authorities assess measures to prevent similar occurrences in future.
