Residents of Dangamvura's Ward Eight in Mutare are living in fear following a surge in violent attacks and sexual assaults allegedly linked to unidentified machete-wielding criminals operating in the suburb.

The affected areas - including the P and N sections as well as Areas 12 and 13 - have seen a growing number of incidents in recent weeks, leaving the community shaken and calling for urgent police intervention.

At least three cases have been formally reported, including a rape case involving a schoolgirl, while residents believe several other incidents may have gone unreported due to fear and stigma. Victims describe being attacked by assailants armed with knives and machetes, often in isolated or poorly lit areas.

Community members say the situation has deteriorated into a broader security crisis, with some households now avoiding movement during early morning and evening hours.

Ward Eight councillor Warren Kuhudzai said authorities are working with police and neighbourhood watch committees to respond to the threat. He said patrols have been intensified and community policing structures activated, although limited resources and poor street lighting remain major challenges.

Police have confirmed receiving reports and say investigations are ongoing, with visibility patrols, awareness campaigns and surveillance measures, including drone deployment, being used to track suspects.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, adding that coordinated operations involving specialised units are underway to restore safety.

Meanwhile, residents have criticised what they describe as slow progress in apprehending suspects, arguing that repeated attacks near police stations have heightened public concern and anxiety.

Community leaders are now calling for improved lighting, stronger security infrastructure and faster police action as fear continues to grip the suburb.
