Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is expected in Harare today for a two-day State visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea.

During the visit, President Mbasogo and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa are expected to sign several agreements covering economic cooperation, education, agriculture, mining and skills development.

The visit follows the successful inaugural session of the Zimbabwe-Equatorial Guinea Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC), which was held last month to enhance collaboration across various sectors.

Among the agreements expected to be signed are the Agreement on Economic and Trade Cooperation, an agreement on the Training of Translators and Interpreters, and a Memorandum of Understanding covering education, agriculture and mining.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Zimbabwe's Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Amon Murwira, said the visit would provide an opportunity for both countries to strengthen existing ties and explore new avenues of cooperation.

"We are expecting President Mbasogo for a two-day State visit and he is expected to arrive tomorrow (today)," said Prof Murwira.

"The purpose of the visit is to basically strengthen the relations between the two countries.

"We expect that there will be signing of instruments of cooperation between the two countries and also discuss various new potential areas of cooperation.

"He is also expected to visit some local places."

At a recent post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Zhemu Soda said the inaugural JPCC meeting was aimed at advancing regional and Pan-African integration while strengthening diplomatic, economic and cultural relations between Harare and Malabo.

The two countries agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, education, agriculture, wildlife management, fisheries, tourism and mining. They also committed to promoting regional integration, enhancing political consultations and pursuing the rationalisation of visa fees.

Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea have maintained close diplomatic ties for more than two decades.

Relations between the two nations were further strengthened in 2004 when Zimbabwe played a key role in helping foil an attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea involving foreign mercenaries.

In recent years, high-level exchanges have continued to reinforce the relationship. President Mnangagwa attended President Mbasogo's inauguration in Malabo in December 2022, becoming the only leader from an English-speaking African country invited to the ceremony.

In 2023, President Mnangagwa undertook a three-day State visit to Equatorial Guinea, during which President Mbasogo gifted him a fully furnished Presidential Villa in Malabo, underscoring the close ties between the two leaders and their countries.

The latest visit is expected to further consolidate cooperation and open new opportunities for investment, trade and technical collaboration between the two nations.
