A newly elected Ward 19 headman was among three people injured in a road traffic accident in Mathetshaneni Village earlier this week while returning from a meeting related to his installation.

The accident occurred on a sharp bend near Somathetshane Bridge, where poor visibility caused by dust is believed to have contributed to the collision.

According to witnesses, a bus travelling westwards had just passed through the area, leaving behind a dense cloud of dust. Moments later, a vehicle travelling behind the bus allegedly attempted to overtake despite the severely reduced visibility.

The vehicle reportedly collided head-on with a blue pickup truck carrying the newly elected headman and two other occupants, who were travelling in the opposite direction.

Images taken at the scene showed significant damage to the front sections of both vehicles, highlighting the force of the impact.

Three people sustained injuries in the crash. Villagers said one of the occupants suffered head injuries, while the others sustained cuts and bruises. One of the injured men, believed to have been driving the pickup truck, remained hospitalised as of Wednesday amid concerns that he may have suffered a fracture.

Community members said further medical examinations were delayed after the local hospital reportedly experienced challenges with X-ray services, forcing the injured man to seek additional assessment elsewhere.

The driver of the other vehicle is reported to have escaped with minor injuries.

Residents described the accident site as one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the area, citing poor visibility caused by dust during the dry season and frequent overtaking on narrow sections of the road.

Despite the accident, the traditional leadership succession process proceeded as planned. On Thursday, Mlibazisi Malindi-Sibanda was formally installed as headman at the Malindi homestead in Mathetshaneni Village, succeeding his late father, Walter Malindi-Sibanda, who passed away during the Covid-19 period.
