A sightseeing trip to one of Zimbabwe's most popular tourist attractions ended in tragedy after a 22-year-old man drowned at Bridal Veil Falls in Chimanimani National Park.
The victim, Nyasha Mashava of Village Extension in Chimanimani, reportedly slipped and fell into a pool beneath the waterfall while taking photographs with friends on Sunday afternoon.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident and said the victim was part of a group of four friends touring the area.
According to police, Mashava was accompanied by Tyron Chimondo, Keith Tongai and Irvine Tanaka Usavi when the accident occurred.
"On June 13, 2026, Nyasha Mashava and his three friends, Tyron Chimondo, Keith Tongai and Irvine Tanaka Usavi, were taking photographs at Bridal Veil Falls," Chinyoka said.
"Nyasha slipped, fell into the pool and subsequently went missing."
Police said the victim's friends were unable to locate him despite efforts to search the approximately three-metre-deep pool.
The incident was reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Chimanimani, prompting officers to attend the scene and launch a search operation.
After initial attempts to recover the victim proved unsuccessful, the police Sub Aqua Unit was called in to assist.
"Chimondo reported the matter to ZRP Chimanimani who attended the scene. Efforts to locate the body were made but were in vain," Chinyoka said.
"ZRP Support Unit Sub Aqua attended the scene and retrieved the body which was at the bottom of the pool on the following day."
The body was taken to Chimanimani District Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning are continuing.
Bridal Veil Falls is among Chimanimani's most visited natural attractions, drawing local and international tourists who visit the area for hiking, sightseeing and photography. Authorities have previously urged visitors to exercise caution around waterfalls, rivers and deep pools, particularly during recreational activities and photo sessions.
