FORMER Bulawayo councillor and prominent businessman Mohamed Esat has died at the age of 80, with the City of Bulawayo describing him as a philanthropist and community leader who left a lasting legacy through business, public service and employment creation.

Esat died on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

In a condolence message, Bulawayo Mayor Senator David Coltart, councillors, Town Clerk Christopher Dube, heads of council departments and staff joined the Esat family and the wider Bulawayo community in mourning his passing.

Esat served as a City of Bulawayo councillor for Ward One from 1995 to 2003, during which he sat on several key council committees, including Finance and Development, Audit, Environmental Management and Engineering Services, Future Water Supplies and the Water Action Committee.

The city said Esat would be remembered for his immense contribution to Bulawayo's growth through both his business ventures and philanthropic activities.

"He will be remembered for leaving an indelible mark in Bulawayo through his business and philanthropic work," the council said.

The local authority also noted that Esat was recognised for his contribution to Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, receiving a certificate at Independence in 1980 in acknowledgement of his support.

Beyond local government, Esat served as a member of the Local Authorities Pension Fund Board of Trustees between 1996 and 1999 and participated in a number of professional and civic organisations, including the Bulawayo Publicity Association and other business and development institutions.

The City of Bulawayo credited him with transforming many lives through employment creation and described him as "a beacon of inclusive development."

Through the Esats Shops retail chain, Esat built one of Bulawayo's well-known business enterprises, creating employment opportunities and contributing to the city's commercial development over several decades.

His death marks the end of an era for one of Bulawayo's long-serving business leaders and former public representatives.
