Prominent Italian investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci is reportedly investigating allegations involving an Italian businessman accused of defrauding investors of millions of dollars through a carbon credits project after allegedly claiming to have connections to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Ranucci is the deputy director of Rai 3 and host of Report, an investigative journalism programme produced by RAI.

According to the report, the investigation centres on allegations that the businessman used purported links to Zimbabwe's leadership to attract investment into a carbon credits venture before allegedly defrauding investors.

The reported investigation comes at a time when Zimbabwe is seeking to attract greater foreign investment under the government's "Zimbabwe is Open for Business" policy and its broader efforts to re-engage with European countries.

Ranucci is regarded as one of Italy's leading investigative journalists and is known for reporting on alleged corruption, organised crime and international political affairs. His investigations have attracted significant attention across Europe and have frequently been cited by international media outlets.

According to the report, Ranucci is seeking an interview with Zimbabwean authorities as part of his investigation to better understand the country's investment environment and allegations of high-level corruption.

The investigation also follows recent claims that some individuals have allegedly invoked the President's name to solicit money or investment from businesses and private individuals.

No evidence has been presented publicly linking President Mnangagwa or the Zimbabwean government to the alleged fraud, and no official response from Zimbabwean authorities had been issued at the time of publication regarding the reported investigation.

The report further states that Ranucci recently survived a bomb attack in Italy and is currently under round-the-clock security protection provided by the Italian government while continuing his investigative work.
