Police have launched a manhunt for armed robbers who raided an EcoCash booth in Bulawayo's Emganwini suburb and escaped with US$2,000 in cash and mobile phone recharge cards worth US$587.
The robbery occurred on Monday morning at around 7:45am at an EcoCash booth operating inside a butchery.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.
She said a 21-year-old female cashier from Nkulumane arrived for work and found the butchery already open.
"Upon entering, she found one of the accused persons who was wearing a balaclava pointing a firearm at the butchery attendant and ordering her not to move," said Msebele.
Police said a second suspect, who was also wearing a balaclava, entered the butchery and locked the door from the inside.
The armed robber allegedly approached the cashier, forcibly grabbed her handbag and stole cash amounting to US$2,000 together with airtime recharge cards valued at US$587 before the two suspects fled the scene.
"The total value stolen is US$2,587 and nothing was recovered," Msebele said.
Police have appealed to anyone with information that may assist in identifying or locating the suspects to report to the nearest police station.
Inspector Msebele also urged business owners, particularly those handling cash, to strengthen security by banking money regularly, installing CCTV cameras and alarm systems, and avoiding opening or closing business premises alone.
