BUSINESSMAN and socialite Wicknell Chivayo has announced a major financial gesture to members of sungura musician Aleck Macheso's Orchestra Mberikwazvo, pledging to give all 25 band members Toyota Aqua vehicles.
Chivayo, who is frequently seen in the company of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, said on X, formerly Twitter, that he had on Tuesday handed over 10 Toyota Aquas to members of the veteran musician's band.
He said the gesture was meant to recognise the musicians' contribution to Zimbabwe's music industry, describing Orchestra Mberikwazvo as a band that had spent nearly three decades entertaining Zimbabweans and producing music that had endured across generations.
"This is a band that has spent almost THREE DECADES entertaining Zimbabweans, producing timeless music and creating unforgettable memories for generations of fans," Chivayo said.
He said the band members' consistency, loyalty and dedication deserved to be recognised, adding that the musicians had remained committed to Macheso and his musical career over the years.
Chivayo said he had since learnt that Orchestra Mberikwazvo had 25 members and announced that the remaining 15 would also receive Toyota Aquas.
He instructed the 15 members to submit their registration details to a person identified as Madzibaba Chipaga, saying the vehicles had already been paid for and would be ready for collection within 10 days.
In addition to the vehicles, Chivayo said each of the remaining 15 band members would receive US$2,000 in cash as a token of appreciation for their contribution to Zimbabwean music.
"Continue entertaining us, continue working together and continue supporting the legendary Aleck Macheso in preserving and growing this incredible musical legacy," he said.
Chivayo described the band's nearly 30 years of working together as a significant achievement and wished the musicians continued success.
The announcement adds to Chivayo's high-profile philanthropic gestures towards Zimbabwean personalities and institutions, particularly within the country's entertainment and sporting sectors.
