Man arrested on bus over drug haul

A MAN was arrested at Harare's Roadport bus terminus after police allegedly intercepted him in connection with the trafficking of dagga and unregistered medicines from South Africa into Zimbabwe.
Tinashe Manyeruke, who is believed to work for a South African bus company and was responsible for handling luggage on one of its buses, appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo facing charges of dealing in dangerous drugs and possession of unregistered medicines.
He was remanded in custody pending bail considerations.
The State alleges that detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics received a tip-off last week that Manyeruke was aboard a South Africa-registered Silver Kings Logistics bus travelling to Zimbabwe with drugs.
Acting on the information, detectives mounted surveillance along the Harare-Masvingo Highway and intercepted the bus at Skyline Tollgate before following it to Roadport in Harare.
The detectives allegedly approached the driver, identified themselves and explained the purpose of their operation.
Manyeruke, who was allegedly seen talking to the driver, reportedly disembarked and fled before detectives could arrest him.
Police subsequently searched the bus and allegedly recovered several parcels from the back seat, where Manyeruke was said to have placed his luggage.
The search reportedly yielded five packets of compressed dagga weighing approximately 4.952kg, concealed in a black plastic bag.
Detectives also allegedly recovered 1 500 Promos sildenafil citrate tablets, 600 Black Cobra sildenafil citrate tablets, a further 1 050 Black Cobra 200 sildenafil citrate tablets and 90 bottles of Astra Pain cough syrup.
The bus driver allegedly told investigators that Manyeruke had loaded the luggage in South Africa and was responsible for handling all luggage aboard the bus.
Police failed to locate Manyeruke that night.
However, detectives allegedly received information the following day that he had returned to Roadport while the bus was preparing to load passengers for its return journey to South Africa.
He was subsequently arrested and his cellphone seized.
Police claim that a search of the cellphone uncovered WhatsApp messages allegedly linking Manyeruke to the recovered substances.
The State valued the seized dagga at US$500, while the unregistered medicines and sildenafil citrate tablets were valued at approximately US$2 100.
The total value of the recovered substances was put at US$2 600.
Manyeruke remains in custody pending the determination of his bail application.
