100, 000 expected at inaugural Munhumutapa Day

Mashonaland Central is preparing for a major turnout on Tuesday as President Emmerson Mnangagwa leads Munhumutapa Day commemorations in Mvurwi, where he is also expected to launch a 259-hectare housing project targeting youths.
More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the event, with authorities saying road upgrades are underway and the main venue is about 95 percent ready.
President Mnangagwa declared September 15 a public holiday to commemorate Munhumutapa Day, which Government has linked to Zimbabwe's pre-colonial heritage and nation-building efforts.
Mashonaland Central Zanu-PF provincial chairman Kazembe Kazembe said preparations for the event had been completed.
"Transport is sorted. Logistics are done. We are ready," he said.
People from Bindura, Mbire, Guruve, Mount Darwin, Rushinga, Shamva, Mazowe and Muzarabani are expected to be transported to Mvurwi for the celebrations.
A major highlight of the programme will be the launch of the Munhumutapa Housing Scheme, under which 2,000 young people in Mashonaland Central are expected to receive residential stands.
The project covers 59 hectares in Mvurwi, while another 100 hectares each have been set aside in Kimcourt, Centenary and Bindura.
Zanu-PF Youth League leader John Paradza said the housing initiative was first piloted in Masvingo before being rolled out across all 10 provinces.
"This is about empowering young people with land for housing," he said.
More than 30,000 youths from across the country are expected to converge on Mvurwi for the celebrations.
Paradza said the housing programme forms part of broader Government and party initiatives targeting youth participation in sectors including transport, mining and construction.
He said Munhumutapa Day should be viewed as more than a public holiday, describing it as an opportunity for Zimbabweans to reconnect with their history.
"It's about remembering who we are. The Mutapa Empire built Great Zimbabwe. Today we are building a new Zimbabwe under the President's leadership," he said.
Paradza also thanked Mnangagwa for declaring September 15 a public holiday following a request from the Zanu-PF Youth League.
Mazowe North legislator Tsungai Makumbe urged young people to attend the event while maintaining discipline.
The build-up to the celebrations included the Munhumutapa Half Marathon held in Mvurwi on Sunday.
Kazembe said the sporting event was also intended to promote healthy lifestyles among young people and discourage drug abuse.
"It's a statement that we won't lose our youth to drugs," he said.
The event also incorporated health checks and first-aid training.
Organisers say Munhumutapa Day embodies the spirit of nation-building, drawing inspiration from the pre-colonial title associated with the Mutapa state and linking its historical legacy to Zimbabwe's present development drive.
They have framed the message around building the country "brick by brick" while encouraging young people to participate in its economic and social development.
