Bard Santner Microfinance Bank has unveiled a 13-member board of directors comprising experienced banking executives, financial regulators, auditors and corporate governance specialists from Zimbabwe and abroad, following its launch last week.
The institution aims to establish itself as a diaspora-focused financial services provider, targeting the multi-billion-dollar remittance market while placing strong emphasis on corporate governance and the protection of depositors' funds.
The board comprises directors from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mauritius, India and the United Kingdom, bringing together expertise in banking, financial regulation, audit, corporate law and business management.
Vinod Bussawah has been appointed board chairman, while the independent directors are Roger Bennett, Scott Trimble, Brad Shorkend, Peter Wood, Dr Roshan Boodhoo, Niazi Hoolash and Monika Bhatt.
The non-executive directors are Senziwani Sikhosana, Tatenda Hungwe and Lucia Chingwaru, while Ngonidzashe Chikowore serves as managing director and Givemore Gomo as finance director.
The bank's governance structure comes against the backdrop of Zimbabwe's troubled banking history, characterised by institutional failures, corporate governance weaknesses and periods of economic instability that have eroded public confidence and savings.
Bussawah, a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants with more than 30 years of experience in finance and governance, brings extensive board-level expertise and currently chairs audit committees at two listed companies.
Boodhoo, a former chief executive of Mauritius' Financial Services Commission and former deputy chief executive of SBM Group, adds experience in financial regulation and banking leadership. He also serves on the board of a Nasdaq-listed company.
Trimble brings three decades of senior and board-level experience at HSBC, HBOS, Grant Thornton, Moore Global and the Isle of Man financial regulator. He was named UK Anti-Money Laundering Advisor of the Year in 2022 and 2023.
Bennett has four decades of experience in banking and trust services, including roles at Lloyds Bank, Canada Trust and CIBC. He also founded Fortress Management Services in the Isle of Man.
Hoolash, a former associate director at KPMG and senior manager at PwC, has experience in central bank-mandated commercial bank restructuring. Shorkend contributes expertise in leadership development and corporate strategy, while Bhatt specialises in company secretarial practice, corporate law and governance.
Wood, a former chairman of BancABC Zimbabwe, brings knowledge of the domestic banking sector and its operating environment.
The Zimbabwean directors are expected to provide local market expertise and help guide the institution's strategic direction, while the executive team will oversee daily operations, financial management and business performance.
The bank's focus on diaspora customers positions it to pursue opportunities in remittances and digital financial services, sectors where accessibility, efficiency and customer confidence are important competitive factors.
However, its long-term success will depend on its ability to translate the board's collective experience into effective oversight, sustainable operations and strong safeguards for customers' funds in Zimbabwe's challenging financial environment.
