Two gunshots were heard as police responded to an armed robbery at Mthombowesizwe Primary School in Bulawayo's Entumbane suburb early this morning.

The incident occurred at around 4.15am when five men allegedly raided the school and targeted a safe in the administration block.

The suspects, reportedly dressed in black and wearing masks, allegedly tied up a Bulawayo City Council security guard before forcing their way into the administration block.

They are said to have been armed with grinders, which they allegedly used during the break-in.

It was not immediately clear how much money was in the safe or how much the suspects may have stolen.

The robbers are suspected to have escaped by jumping over the school's perimeter wall.

Despite a swift police response, no arrests had been made by the time of writing, with investigators already at the scene.

The security guard reportedly sustained minor injuries and was assisting police with investigations.

The robbery comes amid a recent spate of reported robberies targeting shops in Entumbane.

The sound of gunshots reportedly prompted frightened residents who were already awake to discuss the incident in neighbourhood WhatsApp groups.
