FORMER Cabinet minister and Zanu-PF founder member, Enos Nkala, who is admitted at a local private hospital, on Good Friday got to speak to an old friend - President Mugabe.
Nkala, who was admitted last Wednesday evening for kidney and heart-related complications, got to speak to President Mugabe over the phone during a visit by Mines and Mining Development Minister Dr Obert Mpofu.
Despite private media reports of bad blood between President Mugabe and himself, Nkala could be heard chuckling and respectfully addressing the President as "Sir", the state media claims.
Although he is unwell, his face spoke of a man who shared a special bond with President Mugabe.
During the brief cellphone conversation, an elated Nkala told the President that he would "pull out" as God would hear President Mugabe's prayers.
"I know God will hear you. A prayer from you is more important than any other prayer," he said.
Nkala, who could not hide his joy, also said to President Mugabe: "It is wonderful to hear your voice".
He was also full of praise for Dr Mpofu, who facilitated his conversation with the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
"Obert, I don't know what to do. God knows better. Ukuthi ngike ngizwe inkosi ikhuluma," he said.
Dr Mpofu told Nkala that it was important that he visits him in hospital as President Mugabe always inquired on his health.
"His Excellency always asks me how you are doing. It is important that I visit as we get blessings from you, our elders," he said.
Nkala jokingly blamed his poor health on his old age.
"I am now old. Eighty years is not a joke," he said, adding that he preferred to receive medical treatment in Bulawayo.
"I get homesick in Harare and South Africa. It is better to be here."
Mrs Thandiwe Nkala said her husband had been in and out of hospital for a while now. She also revealed that he had been in the intensive care unit last week.
"He has not been well for a while. Last week he was in ICU and this week he was admitted on Wednesday night," she said.
Zanu-PF was formed at Nkala's Highfield home in Harare and he is also a former Minister of Finance, Defence, Home Affairs and National Supplies.
