FOUR people were killed, three of them on the spot, while two others were seriously injured when a Nissan twin cab truck collided head-on with another truck while trying to overtake, police said.
Police identified the three as Piaton Gapu, George Sithole (addresses not given) and Reginald Mavesere (39) of Unit J in Chitungwiza.
Acting Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said the accident occurred between Gweru and Kwekwe on Tuesday at about 7.30pm near Hunters' Road along the Harare-Gweru road at the 238km peg.
"Piaton Gapu was driving his Nissan along Kwekwe-Gweru Road with four passengers on board while Reginald Mavesere was travelling alone towards Gweru along the same road. On approaching the 283km peg, Gapu overtook an unidentified vehicle, resulting in his truck colliding head-on with Mavesere's truck, a Nissan pickup single cab. The two drivers died on the spot together with another passenger. The other three who were injured were taken to Kwekwe District Hospital where George Sithole died on admission. The bodies were taken to Kwekwe Hospital mortuary," she said.
Asst Insp Mukwende said the two vehicles were towed to the Vehicle Inspection Department depot in Kwekwe for inspection.
She said the police were still investigating the matter in an effort to ascertain the cause of the accident.
