MYSTERY surrounds the death of a Pumula Old man in Bulawayo who reportedly committed suicide at police holding cells in the suburb.
Bulawayo police have not yet given an official account of events on the fateful Saturday night when Josphart Ndlovu (27) took his life in police custody, but his family strongly suspect foul play.
Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo told Radio Dialogue that he is attending to an investigation in Nketa and could not shed more light on the matter.
A day later, upon the second inquiry Insp Moyo said he was in a meeting and was not certain when it will be finished so that he can give more details regarding the alleged suicide.
A well-placed source said the deceased Ndlovu was arrested on Friday in connection with theft of a mobile phone.
"He was said to have stole a phone from a fellow tenant at their lodgings in the suburb and was taken in by the police for questioning on Friday," said the source.
He said he was later released, but in a twist of events he was re-arrested by a member of the Special Constabulary Unit in connection with a murder case, whose main suspect fled to South Africa.
"He was then taken in as a murder suspect of a case whereby a certain man was killed by a mob and the main suspect fled to the neighbouring South Africa. What I also understand is that the man who was killed was a close friends to this member of the Special Constabulary Unit.
"What happened at the time of his re-arrest and Saturday 10 pm still remains a mystery," said the source.
The deceased's family was informed by the police that he had reportedly committed suicide.
A family spokesperson, Madeline Moyo said there will wait for postmortem results because they are not convinced that their son actually committed suicide.
"We are still in shock and we think something happened to him, he did not voluntary take his life," said Moyo.
Reports in the suburb are that a relative of the deceased has since been warned by the police for confronting them on allegations that there was foul play leading to the death of Ndlovu.
