Former ZBC TV, SABC TV and radio news anchor and DStv's Studio 53 presenter Alyce Chavunduka was tossed into a police holding cell for not paying her bill at a Capetown seafood restaurant.

The veteran presenter went to Cape Town Fish Market in Sandton on Wednesday night and ordered food and drinks worth R150.

Court documents state she ordered prawns, calamari and three glasses of dry white wine.

She allegedly wolfed down the shelfish and squid, and knocked back the wine before attempting to "flee".

Restaurant owner Heinrich Wessels says: "I wasn't in the restaurant but the manager called me when Alyce gave them a problem. I offered the manager my cellphone to use to let her call around for her friends to come and pay for her."

He says Chavunduka then wrote a note on a small piece of paper, which she left on the table she was sitting at,saying: "Apologies for inconvenience, Alyce Chavunduka."

Restaurant manager Charles Makwathi says Chavunduka wanted to leave but the waiter stopped her and asked her to pay.

"She told the waiter she had no money because she had brought the wrong bag with her," says Makwathi.

"She promised to bring the money the following day.

"I suggested that she call a friend, boyfriend or family member to bring her other bag with the money in it, but she told me she had no boyfriend, friends or family to help her."

He says he asked her to leave something valuable such as a cellphone, which she could collect when paying, but she refused.

"So I phoned my boss, who suggested that she leave her leather jacket, but she wouldn't," says Makwathi.

He says she then caused a scene and said they must call the cops, "so I called the police to arrest her".

Chavunduka was arrested and spent two nights at the Sandton police station holding cells because she allegedly could not afford the R500 bail.

She appeared at the Randburg Magistrates' Court on Friday and her case was postponed to next month.
