MDC-T spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora yesterday received a standing ovation from scores of party youths during a provincial rally in Harare with some of the youths urging him to challenge Nelson Chamisa for the secretary-general's post despite his inferior number of nominations.

The youths claimed Chamisa's nomination by 11 out of the party's 12 provinces was fraught with irregularities, saying Mwonzora still had a chance to win the post at congress next week.

Mwonzora was mobbed by his sympathisers when he headed towards his car during the rally at Cyril Jennings Hall in Highfield, with some shouting "Dougie, Dougie, Dougie" with others lifting him in excitement.

"I feel humbled by the level of support displayed. This shows that there are a lot of people who take me seriously as a leader. I am left with no doubt that I will win in Harare," Mwonzora said.

"Hopefully, I hope to win the final battle in a free and fair contest. Hope it will move as planned. The polls will be handled by the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions. I am contesting against a good candidate. It will be a contest, not a fight."

In Harare, Mwonzora won the first round of the poll, but lost in a rerun which was conducted in his absence.

Mwonzora has until this week to choose whether to contest for the secretary-general or party spokesperson post.
