Five police officers accused of murdering a commuter omnibus driver over a spot fine altercation have been granted $100 bail each by the High Court.
Richard Bizure (28), Liberty Magodo (29), Tinevimbo Muzeziwa (28), all ZRP officers stationed at Marondera rural police post together, with Tafadzwa Turipa (25) and Rambo Bhunu (38) from the Special Constabulary Branch were granted $100 each bail with the consent of the state.
The five were ordered to deposit the bail money with the Clerk of Court of Marondera, to reside at their given addresses and to desist from interference with investigations and witnesses until the matter is finalised.
Charges against the five arose on the 1st of November 2014 when they were involved in an altercation with a commuter omnibus operator at the 20 km peg along the Marondera-Murewa highway.
It was heard that the five, who were manning a roadblock, issued the deceased Mugove Manange a receipt of a ticket for failing to produce a licence disc which he refused to pay, saying he did not have the money.
The first accused Bizure grabbed him by the belt and upon realising he was being overpowered, his four colleagues teamed up to assist in handcuffing Manange who was resisting arrest.
It was further heard that it was during the scuffle that Manange fell twice on his face and became unconscious.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at Marondera Provincial Hospital, leading to the arrest of the five police officers.
