The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, ZUJ, would like to congratulate the two national vice presidents, Honourable Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Report Mphoko following their recent appointments to the key positions.

Vice President Mphoko, according to media reports, will among other portfolios be responsible for the Media, Information and Broadcasting Services Ministry, under which the union operates.

Vice President Mnangagwa will among other ministries, handle the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare ministry in which the Union has interests as it is responsible for the working conditions and labour rights of journalists.

The Union still remembers that it was VP Mnangagwa who was the then Minister of Justice who challenged journalists in the 1990s to begin the process of establishing a self regulatory mechanism for the media at the height of agitation by journalists.

We wish the two vice presidents well in their offices and the Union will stand ready to avail itself on issues pertaining to the improvement of the Zimbabwean media industry from a professional, ethical and development perspective and the working conditions, labour rights and safety of journalists.

ZUJ also congratulates journalist, Honourable Supa Mandiwanzira on his elevation to the new ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister.

ZUJ Secretary General, Foster Dongozi said of Mandiwanzira's appointment: "As a family of journalists we are excited that one of our own, Supa, has been elevated to Cabinet and we ask him to continue to speak on behalf of journalists.

"We had a very good working relationship with Honourable Mandiwanzira when he was deputy minister of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services and we wish him well. We also take this opportunity to congratulate the new deputy minister, Honourable Monica Mutsvangwa and we look forward to fruitful engagements with her."

In the 2013 harmonised elections the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists endorsed the candidatures of journalists from all political parties who aspired to be members of the National Assembly and some of those who elected include former ZUJ President, Honourable Kindness Paradza, James Maridadi, Supa Mandiwanzira, Makhosini Hlongwane, Malaki Nkomo and Ladislous Ndoro.
