Armed robbers arrested

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a spate of armed robberies after a high speed car chase and exchange of fire in Chitungwiza.

The two suspects Kelvin Kudzai Chawana (24) and Shyleen Nyamweda (18) are now in custody.

Police detectives received information that the suspects who were on the police wanted persons list had been spotted at a house in Zengeza 5.

Upon seeing the detectives the suspects sped off in a Toyota Ipsum while firing shots.

Police details pursued the vehicle and fired shots that deflated the accused's rear tyres resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and overturned, killing one of the suspects Ignatius Mudzingwa the spot while his accomplices were taken to Chitungwiza General Hospital under police guard.

Police recovered firearm cartridges from the vehicle.

The accused persons were on the ZRP wanted persons list in connection with five robbery cases which occurred in Avondale, Machipisa and Southerton areas in Harare.

In another incident, the ZRP has also arrested Ritsmen Matsika (21), Barnabas Dube (33), Tafadzwa Muzanenhamo (32) and Loyd Makumana (23) who had robbed people of their two cellphones, US$22 and airtime cards at the corner of Robert Mugabe Road and Rezende Street on the same day.

The criminals had offered the complainants a lift to Epworth and attacked them with a knife and fists.

They pushed the complainants out of their vehicle and went away.
