A DRUNKEN granny from Gutu was burnt beyond recognition when she allegedly accidentally set her kitchen hut on fire with a burning log while preparing supper. Zvichanzini Mutsvanga (80) of Chakanyuka Village under Chief Mazuru allegedly spent the day drinking beer on Saturday at a nearby homestead.
Police said she left for home at around 7PM and tried to make a fire to prepare supper but she accidentally set her hut alight.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said the deceased's remains were taken to Masvingo General Hospital for post-mortem.
"We have received a report of sudden death involving an elderly woman from Gutu whose remains were found in her kitchen hut after it had caught fire. It is suspected that the woman who was thought to be drunk could have accidentally set her hut on fire but investigations are continuing," said Insp Mazula.
A villager, Mr Emmanuel Chigara (38) said at around 3pm, Mutsvanga, who lived alone, left home for Makadzira homestead where there was a traditional brew.
Mr Chigara said after the beer drink, the elderly woman left for her home, which is a few kilometres from the homestead.
"At around 8pm, a neighbour, Mr Vengai Makavadzira (74) went out of his house to attend the call of nature and he saw Mutsvanga's kitchen burning. Makavadzira alerted other villagers who rushed to the scene only to find the roof having already caved in. The villagers managed to put out the fire but Mutsvanga's body had been burnt beyond recognition," said Mr Chigara.
