HARARE - Msasa Park residents have come together to contribute some money in efforts to rehabilitate roads in their area.
Harare Residents Trust said the Msasa Park Residents Committee has demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt that through unity of purpose and sacrifice by the residents, and the cooperation of officials from the Harare City Council, there is something positive that can come out of a community.
"The residents in Msasa, led by their residents committee has been meeting with residents and officials from the Department of Works, from Cleveland House, and together they have been able to patch several roads in Msasa Park. These include Homestead, Flame Lily Drive, part of Fennel Road, part of Msasa Drive and part of Key Eddie Road which have been patched with tar," said the trust.
"Part of Key Eddie Road, Nyamudzura Road, part of Penny Royal and part of Msasa Drive have been patched with gravel. This project has been going for more than 15 months."
The trust said initially the residents would contribute $5 each household, and they would buy the tar, the fuel, and they volunteered their labour, just for the love of their community.
"This is a community largely resided by the middle class, who have made it in life, but who do the manual jobs for their community. They are united, and they are accountable to each other. Every cent they contribute is accounted for. Of course there was resistance in the beginning, but now there is increasing cooperation among residents," said the trust.
"It is an initiative worth emulating in our different communities, starting with the right people who have the serving attitude. Slowly and surely, we can make a difference in our communities without the burden of the potholes, the dysfunctional street lights and the shortages of water, and even the piling garbage at our shopping centres and street corners. In all this, there is one thing that you can do for your community. Think about it. Yes the service providers have a duty to serve you, but you have an obligation to service your community more."
