The nation and ZAPU in particular is plunged into yet another episode of mourning as we learnt of the sad passing on of Landcart Gumpo who died in Bulawayo after a long illness after he suffered stroke in 1996.
Born on 05 May 1935 in Ntabazinduna, Landcart did his primary education at Ntabazinduna School.
After school, he worked for Rev Manod Williams as a cook and later moved on to work at Matobo Book Centre.
He later on moved and worked at as a buyer at Raizons in Bulawayo.
Landcart Gumpo became Chairman at Highlanders Football Club from 1976 to 1978. He was at the same time an elder at the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (eHabe).
Gumpo was married in 1958 to Joan, with whom they were blessed with four children (two boys and two girls).
Landcart Gumpo was one of President Joshua Nkomo's drivers at some time during the liberation struggle. Speaking at his funeral service in Makhokhoba today, ZAPU Secretary General Srtike Mkandla, who stood in for ZAPU President Dumiso Dabengwa, said drivers for high ranking nationalists like former President Nkomo is not an easy task and Cde Gumpo must be appreciated for diligently serving in that capacity.
Mkandla said it is rare for people like Cde Landcart Gumpo to be noticed as they are always behind the shadows of those they serve yet the struggle could not have succeeded without them.
His political engagements against colonial powers with ZAPU saw Landcart in stints of detention at Gonakudzingwa from 1964 to 1980, and again under the black government of ZANU in 1984, with frequent trips to Khami and Hwahwa.
The nation continues to lose the torch bearers of our nationalist movements and fighters for our liberation from colonial rule. ZAPU joins the Gumpo family, Highlanders FC and the nation in mourning our hero. His good work ethics and dedication we shall emulate as a way of celebrating his life and values he taught us.
Rest in eternal peace cde Landcart Gumpo
