50‑year‑old man jailed 20 years for raping Grade 5 girl

A 50‑year‑old man from Gokwe has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted on two counts of raping an 11‑year‑old Grade 5 pupil.
The Gokwe Regional Magistrates’ Court heard that sometime in 2024, in Chief Chireya’s area in Gokwe North, the girl was tending goats when the offender approached her. He allegedly lured her with snacks and biscuits before ordering her to lie down and raping her. He then threatened her to ensure she did not disclose the abuse.
The court was told that the man continued sexually abusing the child on several occasions until 18 February 2026, when the victim’s brother caught him in the act in the grazing lands.
Although the abuse occurred multiple times, the two recorded counts were treated as one for sentencing purposes.
The court condemned the sexual abuse of minors, describing it as a grave violation and a failure by society to protect vulnerable children. It said sexual predators and paedophiles had no place within communities.
