According to a police statement issued on 5 April 2026, the accident occurred on 3 April at around 9:10 PM near the 57‑kilometre peg.

The victims were reportedly bystanders who had stopped at the scene of an earlier accident when a truck veered into them, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Police have released the names of five of the seven victims who have since been positively identified by their next of kin. They are:
- Khumbulani Tshuma (32) of Filabusi

According to police reports, some of the victims were occupants of vehicles that had pulled over at the accident scene - including a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Probox - while others were assisting or observing when the fatal incident occurred.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers associated with stopping at accident scenes along busy highways. Authorities have urged motorists and members of the public to exercise extreme caution and maintain safe distances when approaching or assisting at crash sites.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
