TWO Dete men were on Tuesday night allegedly shot dead after intervening in a bid to stop a fight between a man and his ex-wife.

The shooting case was reported in the Lubimbi area of Matindili village under Chief Kavula in Hwange district. The accused has been identified as George Maruva of Mutiusinazita village in Buhera.

The deceased were identified as Conference Shona (39) and Masomere Masomere (38).

According to sources, Maruva was said to have arrived at his ex-wife Grace Tshuma's homestead on Tuesday night armed with a gun and accused her of dating Masomere.

"The two separated years ago and suddenly Maruva visited Tshuma's homestead at around 8pm accusing her of deserting their marriage to date Masomere," said the source.

"He threatened to shoot her with a gun he was carrying and that was when Tshuma ran to alert her neighbours who immediately came to her homestead and found Maruva still there.

"Shona and Masomere were armed with logs and axes and upon arrival asked who Maruva was and why he was causing havoc. This did not go down well with the accused who then threatened to kill them if they continued interfering in his affairs.

"The two tried to attack him and Maruva immediately pulled out a revolver shotgun and shot Shona once on the left side of the chest and Masomere once in the stomach and once in the back and they died on the spot. Maruva fled and is still on the run," the source said.

A report was made at Lubimbi Police Base before the Dete and Hwange Criminal Investigations Departments were alerted and attended to the scene early on Wednesday.

A relative of the deceased expressed sadness at the death of Shona and Masomere saying she had repeatedly warned the two against interfering in Tshuma's problems.

"Elokufa kalitsheli (no one knows when they will die). I had warned them to stop interfering in her issues with her ex-husband. Now their children have been left fatherless just because of a jealous man," she said.

Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese could not comment on the matter saying she was in Binga.
