Zimbabwean Olympian and top sportswoman Kirsty 'Golden girl' Coventry alongside with former Big Brother Africa Zimbabwe representative and businesswoman Pokello Nare joined the MDC political party led by former Premier Morgan Tsvangirayi .
News from Harvest House, the MDC headquaters, suggest that the pair met with Youth wing President Solo Madzore and Women's league boss Theresa Makoni sometime last week and will be formally introduced to the party's council and leadership at press conference on Wednesday. Coventry was accompanied by her husband Tyron Seward whilst the Queen of Swag was accompanied by her celebrity boyfriend Elikem Kumorji who is from Ghana.Sources say the pair's arrival at Harvest house became chaotic as street vendors jostled to catch a glimpse of the pair who were quickly whisked away by party security personnel.
Analysts say Coventry and Pokello joining the opposition might lure more youths and celebrities to join the democratic movement as many youths view them as their role models. But social commentator Belinda Chowa said Pokello should have not joined politics and focused with her entrepreneurial objectives and her showbiz carrier and added that the minority white community's involvement in local politics is increasing slowly.
The MDC led by Tsvangirayi had been rocked by factionalism with senior party leaders calling for its leader to pass the stick to others.Tsvangirayi insist the party is much stronger like never before. There are reports that Secretary General Tendai Biti and ambitious Organising Secretary Nelson Chamisa, Elias Mudzuri and suspended deputy finance Chief Elton Mangoma are vying for Tsvangirayi's post. The former Premier says he will only leave if he looses at the national elective congress slated for 2016.
