ONE of Highlanders FC products touted to be a star for the future Joel Ngodzo, has been shut out of the squad for the coming season while ex-captain Innocent Mapuranga is on standby pending negotiations together with other unnamed players.
Ngodzo has not been attending training and even skipped a physical fitness programme that the technical team had arranged for him in order for the player to lose weight.
The door has been closed on How Mine's midfielder Xolisani Moyo, rightback Lewis "Rambo" Ncube and Marshal Machazane whose status the club failed to verify from Buffaloes where he played last season.
Zephaniah Ngodzo could make a return to the club after being put on the waiting list that the coaches termed "optional list" which will be considered if the club fails to secure services of the unnamed quartet that they are keen on.
Mapuranga, Lindelani "Vice" Ncube, Simba Sithole and Peter Muduhwa are also in the optional list.
Highlanders coach Bongani Mafu submitted his final list of players for the season to the club's executive on Monday evening where he also made recommendations that players who are on his optional list be kept within Highlanders books and be loaned out to get game time.
New players in Mafu's final squad are holding midfielder Tendai Ngulube who was with Harare City, DC Academy's striker Thomas Chideu, leftback Julius Daudi who the club has negotiated for his release from FNB XI of Namibia's Windhoek and Edmore Muzanenhamo.
Highlanders are negotiating for a deal with Black Mambas for the release of 26-year-old striker Ashton Mhlanga whose contract with the police side expires in June.
Bosso are in the hunt for a striker and one of the gunmen that the technical team is reportedly keen on is former striker Obadiah Tarumbwa. The Bulawayo giants are looking for a suitable replacement for last season's top goalscorer with 13 goals Charles Sibanda who has since joined How Mine.
Mafu made his intentions of securing a rightback clear and that is why Zephaniah is on the waiting list.
The Bosso gaffer is understood to be an admirer of young Bantu Rovers' central defender Teenage Hadebe and the Young Warriors' centreback is believed to be among the targeted four.
Ndumiso Gumede, Highlanders' chief executive officer said the club stuck to recommendations of the board's financial portfolio when it signed players with the view of reducing the ballooning debt.
" We've managed to successfully negotiate with FNB XI on Daudi and now we're doing the same for Mhlanga. Negotiations are also going on for other players on the coach's list and it's our hope that these talks will be concluded soon," said Gumede.
The senior players that have been retained are skipper Ariel Sibanda, his deputy Erick Mudzingwa, utility player Felix Chindungwe, Bruce Kangwa and Simon Munawa.
Leftback Honest Moyo, goalkeeper Njabulo Ncube, Douglas Sibanda who was on loan at Shabanie Mine, Welcome Ndiweni, Rahman Kutsanzira, Knox Mutizwa, Gabriel Nyoni, Ozias Zibande, King Nadolo, Webster Chingodza and Godfrey Makaruse are also in the final squad.
Mthulisi Maphosa who survived disciplinary action and Arnold Ndiweni who was at Black Boots also made the grade into Mafu's squad.
