How Mine 1 - 5 Highlanders
Bulawayo giants Highlanders yesterday ran riot and thumped gold miners How Mine 5-1 in a Premiership encounter at Barbourfields Stadium.

Any lingering demons from last Sunday's Chibuku Super Cup clash that the gold miners won on penalties at the same venue, were well and truly laid to rest as Bosso ran the hosts ragged, scoring two goals in the first half and three in the second.

So dominant were Bosso, with quick passing and movement that left How Mine almost completely without possession of the ball. The win is not only their biggest winning margin in a long time, but their first victory since May when they beat newsboys Whawha at Barbourfields.

The victory also eased pressure on coach Bongani Mafu, who praised his charges for the good performance.

"It's always nice to see my players enjoying their game. I realised that we were too hard on ourselves by taking football games seriously and today was an exception because I told the boys to go out there and enjoy themselves," said a visibly jubilant and relieved Mafu.

"We played very well but we must not be carried away by today's result because we're still in the relegation zone."

The big win, however, only sees Bosso moving one place up from ninth to eighth position with 25 points, changing places with Chapungu, who lost 0-2 to log leaders Chicken Inn to remain rooted on 24 points.

The game started at a breathtaking pace and Highlanders showed their intentions after just two minutes when winger Rahman Kutsanzira broke free on the left and unleashed a ferocious shot from inside the box that was dealt with by Chikurupati defender Nelson Tachi, who blocked it for a corner.

How Mine responded two minutes later following a mix up between the Highlanders defending duo of Peter Muduhwa and Douglas Sibanda, who gifted veteran forward Wonder Sithole with a clear goal scoring opportunity, but he directed his effort wide.

On fire striker Obidiah Tarumbwa jolted the Bosso fans from their seats by smartly chipping a long cross from Simon Munawa over advancing How Mine keeper Donovan Benard in the 10th minute.

But the Bosso multitude were silenced two minutes later by a long range Mernard Mupera equaliser which put the Bulawayo giants' goalkeeping department in the spotlight.

Bosso have rotated their goalkeepers almost on a weekly basis but they all concede similar silly goals.

Mupera received the ball 30 yards out and thumped a shot that sailed into the top left corner of the goal with keeper Njabulo Nyoni flat footed.

Nyoni returned to keep goal for Highlanders replacing Prosper Matutu, who played in the Chibuku Super Cup last week.

On the half hour mark, Bosso were forced into making an injury inspired substitution after defensive linkman Nqobizitha Masuku picked up a knock and was replaced by pre-season signing Tendai Ngulube.

Ngulube stabilised their shaky midfield enabling the creative Munawa to surge forward now and again.

The substitution paid dividends a minute later when Munawa finished off a swift move by Tarumbwa and teenager Godfrey Makaruse.

In the 36th minute, Makaruse got a chance to register his name on the score sheet when he received a beautiful pass from Kutsanzira inside the box, but the 17-year-old blazed over.

Makaruse again sent another chance begging in the 57th minute when he failed to capitalise on poor defending by How Mine.

Tarumbwa grabbed his brace on the hour mark when he finished off a brilliant move involving Munawa and Mutizwa.

Munawa and Mutizwa exchanged passes inside the box before Mutizwa rounded off Donovan and passed the ball to Tarumbwa for a simple tap in.

Five minutes later, Donovan gifted Bosso a goal when his fluffed clearance fell onto the path of Munawa, who found an unmarked Mutizwa to score.

Mafu introduced fan favourite Gabriel Nyoni for the injured Makaruse in the 69th minute, but the speedy forward failed to shine.

Mutizwa put the final nail in How Mine's coffin two minutes from time when he scored from a Nyoni pass after being left unmarked just outside the box.

How Mine gaffer Luke Masomere conceded defeat and acknowledged losing to a better team.

"We failed to play our game today. We failed to play as a unit and they capitalised on that by punishing us. We weren't in the game physically and we were punished," said Masomera.

"However, we would like to thank the officials for their fair officiating today because they made no mistakes like they used to," he said.

Masomera in the run-up to the game declared that they feared poor officiating more than Highlanders, complaining that referees always seemed biased against How Mine whenever they clash against Bosso.
