Econet not going to sponsor Zimbabwe soccer league

Econet Wireless Chief Executive Officer Douglas Mboweni has reiterated that the mobile operator is not going to sponsor the local league.
The revelations surfaced when the organisation appeared before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media, Information and Communication Technology chaired by MDC-T MP for Mbizo, Settlement Chikwinya today.
"Our position not to participate in soccer is actually a position that was taken at a board level after some developments which l might not need to go into detail.
"The board took a position to stay completely out of soccer. In our initial involvement with the PSL (Premier Soccer League) we were determined to make sure that PSL is run on professional line. This was completely misunderstood and so at the risk of continuously being misunderstood the board took a position to stay out of it.
"So until such a time that my board revises such a position there is nothing that we as management can do," Mboweni said.
Econet turned down league leaders in their quest for funding in 2010. Econet, which once unveiled an ambitious five-year league sponsorship deal with the PSL years ago, pulled out over issues it said could potentially ruin its image.
