The local football governing body, Zifa has drafted a contract to engage German mentor, Klaus Dieter Pagels as Warriors substantive coach, the association's chief executive Jonathan Mashingaidze yesterday said.
Pagels who will lead the Warriors for their campaign to defend their Cosafa title had been engaged through a government to government agreement as Zifa's national technical adviser since 2010. The 63 year old did not return to Zimbabwe with the team after the Warriors' 1-0 defeat to Guinea in a 2014 World Cup qualifier last month.
The German coach proceeded to his home country after the match and yesterday Mashingaidze said he is only expected in time to be with his team which troops into camp today. "We had that emergency meeting to discuss what we can offer Pagels, we are looking at what we can be able to offer in terms of money and what we can do.
"As we speak we only have an interim coach and we need someone who can lead us through the 2015 Afcon campaign and other assignments. We shall have a meeting with him and discuss all the concerns," Mashingaidze said. The Warriors are four-time Cosafa Senior Challenge champions and their last triumph came in 2009 when Zimbabwe hosted the tournament. They beat Zambia 3-1 in the final. On the travelling delegation, Mashingaidze said the association will finalise on the rest of the travelling delegation who will be catered for by the association apart from the 25 members whose names were submitted to Cosafa.
In 2003 the Warriors, who are now ranked 114 on the Fifa world rankings, easily beat Malawi in the decider, winning on a 4-1 aggregate. The Warriors have dropped out of the last two recent Cosafa Senior Challenge tournaments without conceding a goal - losing 5-4 on penalties to Mozambique in 2007 and Zambia in 2008 following goalless draws. Acting team manager Patrick Mutesva, standing in for Sharif Mussa who is out of the country on private business, said players are expected to report for camp today at Zifa house by 5pm.
"We will today have a meeting with the Zifa secretariat to finalise on our preparations and travel arrangements. Then we will know if we are going to fly or travel by road."
In Lusaka yesterday, Namibia were made to sweat but came away with a 2-1 victory in their opening Cosafa Cup Zambia 2013 Group A clash against Mauritius at Nkoloma Stadium yesterday. According to reports, the Brave Warriors might have been out of sight by halftime as goals from Petrus Shitembe and Pinehas Jakob gave them a 2-0 lead, but missed chances meant the Mauritians were always in the game.
