FORMER Highlanders and national team coach, Rahman Gumbo, is the favourite to replace Joey Antipas when he leaves Chicken Inn for AmaZulu in the South African National First Division at the end of June.
Antipas signed a deal with AmaZulu last week and will start his new job on July 1.
Chicken Inn, who have been tight-lipped about their next gaffer, are expected to finalise a deal with their prospective mentor in Bulawayo this afternoon.
The new coach will then be introduced to the players at the club's training ground in the presence of Antipas, who returned from Denmark yesterday evening.
Chicken Inn spokesman Tavengwa Hara declined to reveal the identity of their new coach, but hinted that the person replacing Antipas flew into Harare together with the reigning Coach of the Year last night.
"What I can tell you is that the new coach will be part of the technical team when we take on Triangle United on Saturday. The reason the coach is coming now is so that there is a smooth transition. The coach is a Highlanders legend, who is flying into Bulawayo from outside the country," said Hara.
Prominent ex-Bosso players that are now renowned coaches include Madinda Ndlovu, Rahman Gumbo, Methembe Ndlovu and Mkhuphali Masuku. Peter Ndlovu is also a qualified coach, although he has yet to take charge of a topflight side in any league. He is a member of South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns' technical team and is unlikely to leave his job for Chicken Inn.
From the list, Gumbo is the only available person after Madinda reportedly turned down Chicken Inn's offer, while Methembe is concentrating on Grassroots Soccer and Masuku is an assistant coach at Harare City.
Gumbo, who had been rumoured to be among the coaches Dynamos were angling to replace Paulo Jorge Silva, watched Chicken Inn's 0-1 defeat to Bulawayo City at the weekend.
