Pharmaceutical and personal care products manufacturer, Datlabs has started exporting its body moisturising cream, CamphaCare cream to South Africa and will next month send another consignment to Kenya - a move the marketing director Clever Mugadza said was an indication of an improved business environment.

In an interview at the just ended Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, Mugadza said five tonnes of the product were sent to South Africa last year and the second batch would be exported to Kenya.

Last year, Datlabs parted ways with Tiger Brands and launched a new body moisturising cream called CamphaCare.

The pharmaceutical giant is no longer producing and marketing Ingram's Camphor cream in Zimbabwe.

The firm had been making Ingram's Camphor Cream, a brand owned by Tiger Brands of South Africa at its Bulawayo factory for about 50 years.

"We have started exporting regionally. We exported five tonnes to South Africa last year and the response was very encouraging which is why we will be sending our second consignment of
5,2 tonnes to East Africa in Kenya in May."

"We also intend to send small consignments to Zambia and Malawi. We are sending a five tonne container at a time because it is easier in terms of freight and it is cost effective to send one container because more containers mean we might be under too much pressure and may make losses," he said.

Mugadza said the company was looking at exporting pharmaceuticals but this would take some time as drugs and medicinal products may be controlled in most countries.

Datlabs is a leading pharmaceutical and personal care products company which makes renowned brands such as Cafemol and Panado – both pain relievers, cough syrup, Solphyllex and body lotion, Lanolene Milk.

"We have also started registering the camphor product in West Africa starting with Ghana. Eventually we
want to export to the whole of Africa," he said.
