BULAWAYO'S own 'Don Williams', Tafirenyika Dube's wife, Gertrude, died last week Friday after a short illness at Mpilo Central Hospital and was buried on Sunday in her rural home of Wedza.
She was 55.
The visually impaired duo, which was a permanent feature in the city centre, is known by Bulawayo residents for their renditions of songs by American country and western legends such as Dolly Parton, Don Williams, Jimmy Reeves and Kenny Rodgers.
The duo, which had been together for five years, would sit at Pioneer House and sing over microphones while playing the guitar and keyboard.
Dube, who had been singing alone, introduced Gertrude to the music scene some years ago where she added flavour to his act. She contributed in singing church folk songs.
Today, Bulawayo artistes have organised a solidarity hour for Dube where he will perform at corner 8th Avenue and Fife Street at 1.30PM.
Arts commentator, Nkululeko Nkala appealed to residents to come and support the star.
"We know that Dube has been with us for a long time. He is like a monument here and people who have lived in the city know him and his late wife.
"We want to do something for him so that he gets time to mourn his wife Gertrude as he is back performing for the people," Nkala said.
Speaking on his late wife, Dube said while some take time out to mourn their departed spouses, he would actually do so by playing music in honour of Gertrude at their famous spot.
"I am mourning my wife where we used to perform together," he said.
Dube said his wife's health took a turn for the worst in March this year after her cellphone was stolen.
