Viral tears and a US$2,500 storm: Gray Homes breaks silence

It began with a tearful video that spread like wildfire across social media - a woman accusing a construction company of taking her money and failing to deliver. Within hours, the clip had thrust Gray Homes Construction into the centre of a public relations storm.

Letwin Chitemere claims she paid US$2,500 to the company for the construction of a kitchen at her Kariba Round House property, alleging that the money vanished with little progress made on the project. Her emotional account quickly drew sympathy online, with many questioning the company's conduct.

But in a dramatic twist, Gray Homes has now broken its silence, insisting the viral narrative tells only part of the story.

In a statement, the company said it was initially approached to install kitchen cupboards, not to construct an entire house. According to Gray Homes, planning and logistical preparations were undertaken based on that scope of work. However, further discussions allegedly revealed that the client's expectations had shifted to building a full house within a total budget of US$3,500 - a figure the company says was not feasible.

Gray Homes maintains that it subsequently provided a revised quotation reflecting the true cost of the expanded project and advised that additional funding would be required beyond the US$2,500 already paid. The company claims the client indicated she could not meet the revised financial requirements.

"Gray Homes Construction is committed to operating with integrity, transparency and professionalism in all client engagements," the statement reads, adding that all dealings were conducted in good faith with clear communication throughout.

The company also expressed concern over what it described as misleading information circulating publicly and said management would engage the client to resolve the dispute.

Despite the response, emotions online remain high, with social media users sharply divided over who is telling the truth in a saga that has become one of the most talked-about disputes in recent days.
