Intombi Zosiko is a seven member Zimbabwean traditional dance ensemble based in Diepsloot-Johannesburg.

The group is composed of two males and five females averaged 20-24 years of age. It is two months old but has already sent shock waves across Johannesburg locations, the recent performance being the last Saturday show at Hillbrow theatre on Mqabuko day. The group has contacted Linkundla for a short chat and this is what we got from them through their organising secretary Sylvia Mpofu.

Linkundla: When was your group performed?

Intombi: The project started in March 2016 and by July we had a full standing group of five females and two guys.

Linkundla: What is your main objective?

Intombi: Our objective is to revive our Ndebele and Kalanga culture. We have realised that the songs we grew up singing and hearing were now fading away, for example the wedding songs and appeasement songs. People now like Hip-hop and other Western music and are thus forgetting our roots. Hence in our music we employ all traditional props and percussions to sound very original. Those who have watched our ‘iwosana' and 'isitshikitsha' dance know what we are made of

Linkundla: Any completed projects so far?

Intombi: We have productions in stock but we hope to record a Disc soon. These productions have been mainly performed in three different namely: Jeep, Cosmo , and Pretoria.

Linkundla:
What are the major challenges you have met so far?

Intombi: Our major challenge is finance as we cannot even print out our marketing material like big banners and posters for our publicity. Again as new comers in the game we have not yet received enough media coverage.

Linkundla: What can you say to your fans and community?

Intombi: We are still new and we appeal to promoters and show organisers to consider us in their oncoming shows. We have been given little time on stage around Johannesburg events and we only play maybe two songs then its time up. However the reaction from the audiences keeps us going because they always want more from us.

Linkundla: What has encouraged you so far?

Intombi: Whenever we perform, despite the few seconds we are granted we have never walked away with less than R1000,00 from the money thrown on stage by satisfied fans.

Linkundla:
Ok thank you for your time and we wish you all the best and a happy Women's Month!

Intombi: Thank you.
