Egypt's military has deposed the country's president, Mahomed Morsi and installed the head of the country's highest court as an interim leader, the country's top general has confirmed.
After the expiry of the 48-hour ultimatum the military gave Morsi to answer the demands of protesters who have filled the country's streets in recent days, the army has now reportedly placed a travel ban on the country's embattled president.
Gen. Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi said the military was fulfilling its responsibility to protect the country.
Opponents accuse Morsi of having betrayed the revolution by concentrating power in the hands of Islamists and of sending the economy into a free-fall.
Earlier on, the army took control of state television, and crowds opposed to the president cheered and set off fireworks at Tahrir Square while pro-Morsi forces rallied elsewhere in the Egyptian capital.
