A 29-YEAR-OLD Durban man believed to be the mastermind in an international distribution of child pornography images appeared at the Durban Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The man was arrested on Tuesday at his Berea flat after an extensive investigation by the cops.

He was released on bail and his case was postponed to 4 February.

National police spokesman Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said a team of specialised police investigators, looking into online sexual exploitation of minors in South Africa, charged the suspect for possession and distribution of child pornography images.

"The suspect's alleged sexual tendencies first came to the surface when SAPS received a tip-off from their United States counterparts. They were told that a man in South Africa was one of three males communicating and soliciting sexually explicit images from a 13-year-old girl in Virginia, in the US.

"The exchange between the suspect and the minor were done through a mobile application called KIK," said Naidoo.

Cops then searched the suspect's residence and seized six hard drives, six cellphones, a USB, 22 DVDs and CDs, and a 3G card.

In another incident, a 39-year-old man from Midrand, Joburg pleaded guilty in the Alexandra Magistrates Court to charges of possession and distribution of child porn. He awaits sentencing.
