The Century Auto Assembly Plant in Mt Hampden is nearing completion, with investors reporting that the facility is now 95 percent complete and on track to commence vehicle production once outstanding regulatory approvals are secured.

The project represents one of the latest private sector investments aimed at supporting Zimbabwe's industrialisation drive and broader Vision 2030 agenda, which seeks to decentralise economic activity and promote industrial development beyond traditional urban centres.

During a tour of the facility, Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Marian Chombo, assessed progress on the project, which is expected to strengthen the province's position as an emerging manufacturing hub.

Century Auto Assembly Plant Managing Director Mohammud Jammal said approximately US$10 million has been invested in the facility, with installation and construction works now largely complete.

"This project marks a new era of modern industrialisation in Zimbabwe. We are now 95 percent complete and are awaiting the necessary Government certifications to enable us to import specific components required for final assembly," said Jammal.

"Once operational, the plant will produce up to 50 vehicles per shift and create more than 150 direct jobs for Zimbabweans."

According to Jammal, the investment reflects increasing confidence by private investors in Zimbabwe's industrial development prospects and manufacturing sector.

The facility is expected to contribute to local vehicle production capacity, reduce reliance on imported vehicles and support skills development through technology transfer and workforce training.

Speaking during the visit, Chombo said the project is consistent with Government's policy of promoting rural industrialisation and expanding economic opportunities across the country.

"We are encouraged by the significant progress being made at this facility, which aligns perfectly with Government's thrust of promoting rural industrialisation and decentralising economic opportunities," she said.

"Zvimba and Chegutu are emerging as major investment destinations in Mashonaland West, attracting high-impact projects that create employment, enhance skills transfer and contribute towards economic growth."

She added that Government remains committed to fostering an investment-friendly environment capable of attracting further industrial projects and supporting economic expansion.

The Century Auto Assembly Plant will join the already operational Bronzepel Gas Cylinder Manufacturing Plant, another US$10 million investment that has helped strengthen the province's industrial base.

Officials say the combined investments demonstrate growing momentum in the development of manufacturing infrastructure in Mashonaland West and support efforts to diversify Zimbabwe's economy.

Once commissioned, the assembly plant is expected to generate employment, stimulate local supply chains and contribute to the country's broader industrialisation strategy aimed at increasing domestic production and reducing dependence on imports.

The project also highlights the growing role of private sector investment in advancing Zimbabwe's economic transformation agenda and achieving the objectives set out under Vision 2030.
